This permanent millennium funded visitor attraction is dedicated to educating school children and the public in Northern Ireland about renewable energy and increasing awareness of environmental issues. The three gallery exhibition looks at educational and environmental issues displayed through a wide variety of media, with an in-the-round audio visual centre piece show.
When the centre opened at the turn of the millennium the ‘Ecos Visitor and Conference Centre’ boasted a biomass boiler, a reed-bed filtration and a state-of-the-art solar panels system. Notably the building was designed to provide two thirds of its energy requirements from sustainable sources within the site itself.
Fraser Randall were appointed as the design, project and construction manager and worked directly with the building architect, exhibition designers and world renowned artists. Managing the process of content and architectural development simultaneously ensured that user requirement and the centre’s operational needs were considered.
