Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery, is a free interactive gallery that celebrates the vital but unseen role of technicians. This innovative gallery seeks to change perceptions of technical careers and inspire tomorrow’s technicians. Young people can go behind the scenes with technicians working in advanced manufacturing, creative industries, health science and renewable energy to explore where technicians work, hear their inspirational stories, and experience daily life as a technician. Visitors can handle essential items technicians use every day and try out one-of-a-kind interactive exhibits which replicate the important tasks technicians perform.

Fraser Randall were appointed as the Project Managers for both the infrastructure works and the exhibition fitout. The number of parties involved meant there was huge amount of interface across many different groups within the project. Fraser Randall worked very closely with the Client to establish the most efficient procurement route to meet programme and budget requirements whilst ensuring that the bespoke interactive exhibits were allowed maximum design & development time to enable the visitors to get the best possible experience.

The exhibition contains thirteen bespoke interactives, using digital touch screens, interactives with buttons, joysticks and sliders, and interactives with bespoke made props. Fraser Randall assisted with the coordination of all parties during the development process as there was a complex integration required between Main Contractor, AV Hardware Contractor, Lead Designer, and Interactive Developer.

Our roles across both phases of the project included development and implementation of the overall project strategy, programme development, snapshot programming for each phases of works
as well as each package as required. We undertook the management of the Main Contractors for each phase, kept oversight of client direct packages and took responsibility for the overall coordinated programme. We worked closely with the project QS with regards to inputs on requests for change as well as being responsible for monthly valuations.
