Lift 109
Fraser Randall helped deliver Lift 109 at Battersea Power Station, blending innovation, heritage protection, and expert project leadership.
Rising through one of Battersea Power Station’s iconic chimneys, Lift 109 offers visitors a new way to see London and a new chapter for one of the city’s best-loved buildings. Fraser Randall was brought on board early by Ralph Appelbaum Associates (RAA) to lead project management and quantity surveying from RIBA Stage 1, working alongside the Battersea Power Station Development Company (BPSDC) to bring the experience to life.
Delivering Lift 109 meant balancing innovation with a deep respect for heritage. In Turbine Hall A, careful coordination ensured that new building services were integrated without disrupting the historic architecture (i.e. there are no face fixed conduits visible anywhere) – a quiet but critical achievement that preserved the integrity of the Grade II listed site.
Across the wider project, complexity was the constant. With multiple contractors, overlapping programmes, and a live public environment, Fraser Randall structured delivery into clear strands, each with tailored timelines and risk management, ensuring everything stayed on track without compromising visitor access or safety.
One of the most technically demanding elements lay inside the chimney itself. The installation of an interactive lighting system, within a space now classified as a lift shaft, called for close collaboration with Otis Lifts and specialist contractors, and an approach that balanced health and safety, cost control, and programme certainty in equal measure.
Throughout, Fraser Randall provided full financial oversight, leading contractor appointments under a bespoke JCT Design & Build contract and managing live cost reporting to keep the client fully informed at every stage.
Today, Lift 109 offers more than a view, it offers a story: of heritage protected, challenges overcome, and ambition delivered. And at every step, Fraser Randall’s leadership helped lift that vision into place.
