Second World War & Holocaust Galleries
Following the successful opening of the multi award winning Atrium and First World War Galleries, Transforming IWM London built on the extraordinarily high standards set and create two new galleries to tell the story of the Second World War and the Holocaust, and two new state-of-the-art learning spaces. Fraser Randall were appointed during RIBA Stage 1 as the overall project manager, cost manager, contract administrator, and principal designer for the project.
We had a key strategic role and worked closely with the client throughout the project. At the outset we were responsible for strategic planning, structuring the project team, assisting in developing the business case, establishing the overall programme and budget, preparing the procurement strategy, and detailed planning, including full site logistics. We reported for the project on a monthly basis, covering progress, programme, quality, costs, and risks as fundamentals at all stages, but also provided specific ad-hoc reports, engaged with external stakeholders and funders, and provided problem solving support for the client at all levels.
We were responsible for the development of and subsequent management, monitoring, and updating of the programme, and proactively working to identify and protect the critical path, making provision for works interdependencies that characterise projects of this scale and complexity. A crucial part of our role in this context was risk management. From the outset we developed the risk strategy, prepared, and maintained the risk register, facilitating regular review project teams, while providing insight and reports to the client on specific issues, which was crucial during the coronavirus pandemic.
Protecting the integrity of the building’s heritage, while integrating substantial base build interventions, required a structured and highly collaborative approach. Using Building Information Management (BIM) tools and Common Data Environment (CDE) systems, Fraser Randall facilitated a smooth information flow between designers, consultants, and specialist contractors, allowing for seamless planning, approvals, and delivery.
Procurement was carefully phased, with specialist contractors appointed directly by Fraser Randall for key packages including showcases, large objects, AV hardware, security, and digital media. Dedicated package managers, drawn from Fraser Randall’s specialist team, provided leadership across design, fabrication, and installation, maintaining momentum and quality at every stage.
Throughout construction, Fraser Randall’s presence remained constant. From overseeing interim valuations and contractual compliance to managing programme workshops and change control, the team ensured issues were anticipated early and addressed swiftly. Their careful stewardship extended through practical completion and into the defects period, supporting the client at every stage.
The result is a project that does justice to the stories it tells: delivered with precision, resilience, and the quiet confidence that defines Fraser Randall’s approach.
