The Hunterian Museum
The new Hunterian Museum, including the retail space and ancillary display areas, form a major part of the Royal College of Surgeons £65m Transforming the Building development project. The post war buildings were demolished and a new building erected. Fraser Randall were appointed as the Project & Cost Managers, responsible for providing strategic direction against the project objectives, meeting the RCS needs for a museum that integrated seamlessly into a new building, with an ambitious modern vision for its visitors.
Our scope included the management of elements of the gallery basebuild works as well as the eight separate galleries exploring the history of surgery, contemporary surgical practice and related disciplines. We supported the RCS in the development and execution of the procurement strategy, working closely with the client to develop design briefs and tender documentation. We led on the appointment of a world-class design, consultant and build team. Originally our scope was only managing the development and delivery of the fit-out but once appointed it was clear that the exhibition to base build design interface was not being undertaken and we included this role within our scope also picking up a number of basebuild packages that were key to the exhibition fit out whilst maximising value for money throughout the project lifecycle.
As cost managers, we provided stage-by-stage cost report and monthly dashboards including forecasting for early warnings, contingency planning, risk and inflation analysis. Demonstrating the project was on budget at the end of every stage end became a key task due to the funding requirements, so when needed we led value engineering workshops and gave advise on material savings and other procurement efficiencies.
Alongside the full Project and Cost Management services, we were also responsible for directly managing a series of specialist trade contractors including showcases, AV hardware, digital media and object mounts.
